5 Ways to Protect you System from Power Surges

You’ve done everything you can to protect your information technology systems (IT).  You have offsite backup — maybe on the cloud or elsewhere.  You know that almost 17,000 companies are the victim of cyber attacks each year and lose data as a result so you have taken every precaution to prevent that from happening to you.

What have you done for power outages?  Does your security system include an uninterruptible power supply system?  This is often overlooked when developing a company’s IT security system.

5 Reasons Having a Solid Uninterruptible Power Supply System Matters

  1. Freedom from worry.  Once you have the proper system in place, you will sleep so much better at night knowing that no matter what happens, your data and systems are secure.  You may pay extra for an uninterruptible power supply system but it is well worth it in terms of the protection itself but also in how much better you will feel about your system.
  2. Protect your systems from damage. Power outages are inconvenient for network management when they are in process but when the power comes back on, that’s when many problems occur.  A power surge can short out your entire IT system and server.  Any security systems you had in place may have to be replaced.
  3. Save your data.  You already have back up systems set up and you back your stuff up all the time but it’s not something that happens every minute.  If you do not have an uninterruptible power supply system in place, you might lose that critical file you were just working on.
  4. These systems save you time.  Rebooting one computer is a pain.  Rebooting a network of them and the server takes even longer.
  5. Prevents connectivity problems.  Often the uninterruptible power supply systems are there to protect the routers and switches from being damaged by a power surge.  They can also keep your entire network up and during a power outage — if someone was transferring a large amount of data when the power went out, it would stop and have to done all over when the power came back.  With these systems, your employees can continue to work seamlessly.

Think This Can’t Happen to You?

Power outages are not uncommon in the United States.  They cost U.S. businesses about $80 billion a year.  Short blackouts can cost the U.S. economy, somewhere between $104 and $164 billion per year.  USA Today has reported that downtime costs data centers more than $50,000 an hour.  The IT Process Institute has estimated the average time to resolve a black out is 200 minutes.

The United States has some of the most volatile weather on the planet.  We have hurricane, blizzards, tornadoes, heat and cold wave that put a lot of pressure on our electrical grid system.  It only makes sense to include uninterruptible power supply options in your plans for your business security system.
